Intro
Well hello, and welcome back to our series on getting your event ready using Town Hall and Microsoft Teams. By now you’re very familiar with Town Hall. We’ve run through the whole event, we’ve gone from deciding to use Town Hall all the way to getting our post-event analytics. Town Hall for Microsoft Teams is great, but maybe you need something more, like a TV broadcast. Maybe you need a branded background, or lower thirds with names and titles, or a sign language interpreter. Whatever the case, what you may be looking for is the RTMP toggle. So let’s learn a little bit about what that is, and along the way we’ll learn a little bit more about Worktank and how we can help your event be the best it can be.
What Is RTMP?
Before we turn it on, let’s get into what RTMP even does. Long story short, RTMP helps Town Hall create a new source. If you think about the sort of native Town Hall event that we’ve created before, a source would be the presenter that you select to go live, or the screen share that you select to go live. You select these sources, and those are broadcast out for the audience to see. RTMP allows us to deliver a pro-grade broadcast as a selectable source within Town Hall and Microsoft Teams. This allows for a television broadcast level production within the familiar wrappings and engagement tools of a Town Hall event.
Turning On RTMP
To turn it on, we’ll start in the Manage Event window of our Town Hall event. From here, go to Meeting Options and scroll all the way down to the bottom. Toggle RTMP-In to On and select Save. Now go back into Meeting Options and you’ll find a Server Ingest URL and Stream Key.
Deliver a TV-Show Quality Broadcast
So here at Worktank, we run literally hundreds of virtual events a year for some of the biggest Fortune 500 companies on Earth, and we do it all utilizing RTMP. That’s what all these switchboards and mixers and monitors are for. It’s to take raw elements like presenter feeds, decks, and graphics, craft it all into a unified look, and stream that out as a selectable source.
Using RTMP for Your Next Meeting
Now, you could certainly do this at home without all the gear. There’s a free, open-source software called OBS that’s fantastic. Hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions, use it for live streaming. You just give OBS the Server Ingest URL and Stream Key, and technically you’re in business. But, but, but, but, but, here’s the thing.
