Most of us balance two work lives: remote and in-office. The good news for 2025 is the best home studio gear now fits in your backpack.
You have a laptop to take on the road – so why does dedicated audio and video gear matter? Quite simply, your laptop doesn’t cut it. As a leader who’s presenting to a large team or clients, you need to look and sound as professional as your message. A clear, even camera eyeline, good light, and strong audio is cost-of-entry when you’re making a connection with your audience.
As part of Worktank Gear Week, we’ll preview new tools and share expert advice on how you can up your game in 2025. In this post, we focus on top gear that weighs less than a pound, fits in your backpack and will massively improve your presentation quality.
The gear industry is catching up to the road warrior with peripherals that are compact, effective and affordable. Here’s a sampling of mobile gear we love right now.
- Carry-on. Stop checking bags – the fees, the wait and the crowds at baggage claim are unbearable. The peripherals you need will fit into a single backpack. Our backpack pick is a Fjällräven Haulpack No. 1 ($180) and easily stores everything you need. This beautifully designed bag, includes ample pockets, a laptop sleeve and spot for your water bottle. What we love most about Fjällräven is the durable material and how it wears over time. Want an even slimmer option, the tiny Raven 20 ($100) is deceptively roomy.
- A keyboard and mouse for the road. 2024 brought incredible upgrades to mobile and wireless peripherals. Our go-to is the Logitech MX Master Series MX Keys Mini illuminated keyboard and MX Anywhere 3S mouse combo ($180). Both keyboard and mouse are well-built, pairs in seconds and provide just the right amount of feedback. A separate keyboard and mouse are also much more ergonomic so you’re not craning your neck down to see your laptop screen. What we love most: you can pair your keyboard and mouse to up to 3 separate computers giving you an instant connection without diving into your settings.
- Tiny camera. Laptop webcams are underwhelming and if you’re presenting in a meeting, you want your eyeline to match your camera, so you’re not looking down at your audience. For a laptop camera replacement we like the Insta360 Link 2C AI-Powered 4k webcam ($149 BestBuy), a small powerhouse you can clip on to your laptop lid or a desk tripod. For a more versatile – and slightly bulkier – camera that you add to your home setup, check out Elgato Facecam Mk2 ($150 BestBuy). The Elgato Camera Hub app also gives you a ton of options to light for any setting and it integrates with Elgato’s cool Prompter ($280 BestBuy) for when you deliver live or scripted videos. We’ll post more on the Prompter in an upcoming deep dive. Lastly, pack a light tripod that you can separate from your laptop to best frame your face and surroundings. Our pick is the SmallRig Aluminum Mini Tripod ($45 B&H Photo). While a bit bulkier, desk mounted extensions like the Elgato Master Mount L ($40, B&H) bolts to any tabletop and can be craned for both cameras and lights.
- Keep your audio wired. Ditch your laptop’s onboard mic and plug in a USB-C headset and mic combo like the Rode NTH-100M Over-ear Headset with Headset Microphone ($189 Sweetwater) or even use a workaday corded ear bud option like Apple EarPods ($19 Apple). Why wired? Wireless Bluetooth options just aren’t as reliable – and when you’re giving a critical presentation to hundreds of people, you need a worry-free connection.
- Brighten your scene. There are a lot of portable LED light options – and go with the light that lets you adjust both brightness and temperature so you can match the natural light in your space. For years, we’ve been using the Aputure MC RGBWW LED Light ($90 B&H). It will attach to a tripod and has a magnetic casing if you want to attach to a metal fixture. What’s amazing about the tiny light is you can drop one in your background to throw any color against a wall. If you’re without augmented light, always face a window for a bright even light. Best of all, sun light is free.
